Groin hernias may be congenital (born with one) or acquired (developed over time). Congenital hernias follow the testes as they descend into the scrotum during development in the womb. A congenital hernia may be diagnosed as an infant or may not show up until later in life. An acquired hernia develops from a weakness or tear in the muscle or fascia. This may result from repetitive strain. Ventral hernias may develop in an area of weakness or through the scar of a previous surgical incision. |
