What is a Hernia?
Home What is a Hernia? What Causes Hernias? Do Hernias Need to Be Repaired

A hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall that allows the inside contents, such as fat or intestine, to bulge out.  This defect may be a weakness or a hole.  A good analogy is a tire with an inner tube.  If the tire develops a hole (hernia) the inner tube will bulge out.

Hernias occur most commonly in the groin.  Hernias that occur in the abdominal wall are called ventral hernias.
