The board certified surgeons at the Midwest Hernia Institute specialize in the use of the Kugel patch and the Composix Kugel patch for hernia repairs. In addition to serving the local population in Northeastern Illinois, the Midwest Hernia Institute attracts patients from around the country with complex hernia problems or patients who desire a hernia repair with a Kugel patch performed by a more experienced surgeon.
Our MissionThe physicians and staff of the Midwest Hernia Institute are committed to providing the best hernia treatment available by combining the best technologies with extensive experience and to advance the field of hernia surgery through research and training of qualified surgeons from around the world.
Company ProfileThe Midwest Hernia Institute was founded by board certified general surgeons Dr. Jeff Braxton and Dr. Greg Spitz in 1999. Dr. Braxton trained with Dr. Kugel in Olympia, WA and was the first surgeon to bring the technique to the Midwest in 1996. After rapidly gaining experience, the doctors were asked to become instructors by Surgical Sense, Inc., the company manufacturing the Kugel patch. After Surgical Sense was purchased by Davol, a division of Bard (NYSE: BCR), Dr. Braxton and Dr. Spitz were asked to become a major training site for the Kugel patch and a test site for new hernia technologies. The doctors provide on-site training for surgeons from around the world on a bi-weekly basis and travel internationally to provide hernia training.
